SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the Legislature’s passage of Assembly Bill 421. By championing greater transparency, this legislation will empower voters to make informed decisions by ensuring an understanding of both the content and the backers behind proposed initiatives.
Statement from Melissa Romero, Senior Legislative Manager, California Environmental Voters:
“We are energized by the Legislature’s passage of AB 421. This bill embodies our commitment to preserving the integrity of our democratic processes, especially when corporate polluters spend massive dollars to buy the referendum process and confuse Californians.
Earlier this year, we saw corporations hijacking the direct democracy process and intentionally misleading voters to repeal oil setbacks. We are running out of time to prevent the worst of the climate crisis but we can ensure that Big Oil does not abuse this process again.
We look forward to Governor Newsom ensuring that our referendum process is reformed to protect voters. Californians deserve to exercise their voting rights with confidence, free from corporate manipulation.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
