WASHINGTON, DC—The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) and the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which work to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, held a conference call today to announce their endorsement of Scott Peters for re-election to Congress (CA-52). Congressman Peters has made protecting the environment and investing in a clean energy economy a top priority in Congress, and is one of only three U.S. House of Representatives to earn 100% on LCV’s 2013 National Environmental Scorecard.

“Congressman Scott Peters is a true environmental leader in Congress who is always putting the people of San Diego first,” said Sarah Rose, CEO of the California League of Conservation Voters. “He works hard to protect our environment for future generations, and to mitigate the effects of climate change that we are seeing right outside our window—including more extreme wildfire, rising sea levels and longer droughts.”

“Congressman Scott Peters has dedicated his career to protecting the environment, and he continues to work hard every day to make sure that we leave our children a cleaner, more sustainable planet,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “He has been a proven leader on a wide range of issues, including embracing our moral obligation to act on climate change, protecting our waterways and beaches from offshore drilling and other pollution, and advocating for more renewable energy.”

“San Diegans know that our quality of life and economic strength both depend on a healthy local environment, and I’m excited to have LCV’s support as we continue our important work,” said Peters. “San Diegans know we can’t afford to turn a blind eye to climate change or ignore threats to our clean air and clean water, and I’m proud of defending San Diego’s natural resources as an environmental lawyer, City Councilmember, Port Commissioner and now in Congress.”

A member of the House Sustainable Environment and Energy Coalition (SEEC) and chair of its Climate Task Force, Congressman Peters has taken a leading role in tackling climate disruption, including introducing legislation to combat so-called “super pollutants” that are some of the biggest drivers of climate change as well as co-sponsoring legislation to help coastal cities like San Diego mitigate the impacts of climate change. He has also worked hard to reduce our dependence on dirty fossil fuels by fighting against more offshore drilling and for more investments in clean energy and energy efficiency.

Congressman Peters has spent his career advocating for the environment and public health. Prior to entering public service, Peters was an environmental lawyer who stood up to corporate polluters in the courtroom.

In Congress, his voting record earned Congressman Peters a 100% on LCV’s 2013 National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position. For more information, visit http://scorecard.lcv.org.

The contrast on the environment is particularly sharp when comparing Congressman Peters’ record with that of his opponent, Carl DeMaio.

“During his tenure on the San Diego City Council, challenger Carl DeMaio’s cumulative score on the annual Environmental Quality Report Card was the worst of any Councilmember by a significant margin,” said LCV San Diego President Livia Borak. “Members of Congress have even more responsibility to protect our open spaces and address climate change, but Carl has shown his entire career that he puts the safety of our environment at risk.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
