LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Moore v Harper. The Court preserved state courts’ authority, ruling that they have the power to review election laws and maps. Earlier this month, the Court upheld the Voting Rights Act in Allen v. Milligan, marking huge wins for democracy.

Statement from Mike Young, Political and Organizing Director, California Environmental Voters:

“Limiting state courts’ authority would have been catastrophic for our democracy, especially when communities of color are being disenfranchised with election laws and redistricting. Without the preservation of these checks and balances, massive wins, like California’s democratic independent redistricting commission ensuring voters’ input on districts and lines, would not have been possible.

At the same time, it’s troubling that the Court took these cases up at all – these wins for democracy simply protected existing voting rights. We must remain vigilant and engaged in a changing Court. The American people demand that low-income and communities of color are represented by the country’s highest court.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
